The money is a reward for catching the killer(s). The currency is pre-decimal
(ie pre 1971) sterling (Pounds, shillings & pence). There were 12 pence in a
shilling, and twenty shillings in a pound. L in the chart = £ (L is the latin
for libra (a pound). So, for example, the Bishop of Clogher put up £25, 0
shillings and 6 pence. Thomas Speer a more modest £1, 2 shillings and 9 pence.
Average weekly wage in 1780 was 7 shillings.
Takes me back. We had to add those sorts of columns up when I was at school. No
calculators then.
