Hello Dave,
Many thanks for your appreciative response to the post re. the “General
Washington” and your forebear Francis Lyttle.
Francis must have been quite an entrepreneur: emigration agents tapped into the
genuine feeling of enquiry amongst many Ulstermen in the mid-late eighteenth
century although there was concern amongst them for the potentially hazardous
journey to America and the unknown awaiting them upon disembarking. It was the
task of emigrants to attend fairs and market days and perhaps jumping up on a
barrel and engaging with the curious eager to know the benefits of emigration.
So effective was his self-believe that he emigrated himself!
The village of Augher is located within Clogher Parish, Co. Tyrone and you will
find an extensive collection of records for the parish on the CTI website
www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/clogher.html<http://www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/clogher.html>
It is also useful to find records of Francis’ family who did not emigrate and
remained at home. Spellings are Lytle, Lyttle and Little.
If you make it to PRONI, Belfast, it is also worthwhile enquiring what Estate
records (rentals, lists of tenants) they may have amongst their holdings.
Referring to Dr. William Roulston’s Researching Ulster Ancestors (2018) there
were several estates covering the parish: Clogher Bishopric, Forbes, Gorges,
Mervyn, Montgomery, Mountjoy, Moutray and Speer which are listed amongst their
records.
You will have a great time learning more of the native place of your emigrant
forebear.
Regards,
Len Swindley

Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Re: Emigration Agents for the Ship General
Washington

Thank you Len and Jim for that clipping! That was a 'brick wall' breakthrough
for our family. We've been searching for specific records relating to our 4x
great grandfather, Francis Little, who came to PA with his family in 1792 from
Tyrone. That's about as much as we knew.
There he is in the clipping, an emigrant recruiting agent for the ship "General
Washington" that apparently left Londonderry on June 1, 1792, or at 'first fair
wind after.' Also, that he was from the area of Augher (SE of Omagh),
something else we learned. Now, we hope to find a passenger list for that
sailing to see if the family is listed... may turn up in some Pennsylvania
records.

We are planning a family trip to that area next summer if anyone has any
suggestions for such a visit. Hope to get to PRONI archives for a bit.

Best regards,
Dave Lytle
