Hello to All,
Here is an update to my engine situation....
We cracked the case open and found that a center cam journal oil hole was
clogged somehow and the cam spun dry causing the center journal to melt
and spin off metal, that's what my screen caught ( keep your screens)I now
am sending the case out to be line bored and spec'd out. I took it to an
engine shop and they told me where to send it and that they have rarely
seen a problem like this but on occasion.I asked them what could have
caused it he only could figure that somehow the oil passage didn't do it's
thing for some reason .The cylinders are at the shop to have the valves
done the valve guides and the pistons re- ringed and generally cleaned up
and spec'd.I guess that the cam will be sent out to see if it's any good
or perhaps replace it.I'll order a rebuild bushing set.My mags are Bendix
and were factory rebuilt 4 years ago ,carb is rebuilt 4 years ago, wiring
was replaced along with the mags .I would assume that this is the closest
thing to a major since the lower end is gong to be done tooo including the
crank bearings. Hopfully this will produce alot more power and a smoother
engine.I even had my prop overhauled 2 years ago and dyno balanced. This
really should improve things. This really isn't a fun situation but I'll be
happier with knowing it's really safe now and this 50 year old engine will
be reborn.I'm
not exactly sure what the total cost is yet My mech is pepricing all of
this so that I KNOW WHAT'S UP
before he goes ahead and spends my hard earned cash.
I hope to be back in the air by Feb or so (if the weather is good).
