The oil fill pipe enters the oil tank below the level of oil in the tank.

This makes the fill pipe into a barometer. When you run the engine. The
fill
pipe gets a bubble of hot air in it. As the engine cools oil is pulled up

into the pipe. When you open the cap, the level drops, but the stick
shows
the artificially high reading.

Here's a test you could do, but it could be dangerous if you forget. Fly
the
plane. Land, tie it down, then loosen the fill cap so the pipe is exposed
to
the atmosphere. Go away for a couple of days. Do not forget the cap is
loose and crank up the engine! When you return, you should get an
accurate
oil reading first time.
