Been there, done that!  When I was young and bold, I did a x-country between Manti, Utah, and Fargo, N.D.  This was in a Piper Colt, roughly the equivalent of the Coupe.  When I hit Casper, Wy., I couldn't make a direct flight to Rapid City, as the Black hills were socked in.  Thus, I had to head out south east and go around the south end of the hills, and then turn north into Rapid City.  I did have the VOR for a ways east, but then it was just seat of the pants for some time.  Great experience.  That was the day that I finally gained the confidence to say that I was a pilot.

Boring cross country flights?   Whas dat?  I don't ever remember having a
boring cross country.
Especially at night.  There's enough uncertainty up there when it's dark
that I've never been bored.
Murphy's law states that while night flying, as soon as you get beyond
gliding distance of the airport,
the engine immediately starts to run rough, and you'll smell smoke in the
cockpit.  How could you be
bored?
