advice in this forum.]----

I had a lengthy conversation with my friend in Barrow AK yesterday, he
assures me that our point of departure for a screaming speed run
Southward is intact and warming up, yesterday was 10 degrees. He
informed me that the Inuits had already taken 5 whales, though the
Bering Sea was no where near breakup. We have been assured Hangar space
upon arrival which should be between the 20 th and 22 nd of May. Our
Haste to do this has to coincide with several phenomenon. 1) the
Mosquito hatch. (Local entomologists agree that we'll beat that. 2)
Cody won't be out of school till June 15. 3) any roads or remote
airstrips in the bush will still be hard frozen in the case of an
emergency landing. 4) The annual Cooper Migration to Terrell TX.
Numbers 2 & 4 being of utmost import. We are looking forward to Terrell
this year. Need to see some old friends, and make some new ones.
The Aircoupe has been retrofitted for this trip. We took off the wheel
fairings. Added Rieff oil tank heaters and individual cylinder warmers.
Brittain Industries is still alive and well in Tuulsa, (I know that's
misspelled, but that's the way you pronounce it,, Tuulsa.) we have
installed a Directional Gyro with a heading bug, along with the Brittain
interface equipment to couple to the Brittain modified turn
co-ordinator, altogether this install should give us some measure of
assistance in every axis but Vertical, but that's what the trim knob is
for. I have managed to gain about 1 more inch of legroom by modifying
the Fiberglas seats slightly. I deepened the amount that the square
foot on the bottom of the seat can drop into the channel just forward of
the rear spar, one more little item is the floor of the baggage
compartment extends under the rounded portion of the rear of the seat,
this was hollowed out slightly. .25 inches in this area transforms into
an inch of legroom, by allowing the seat back to recline a little
further. I'll be spending about 200 hours in the coupe over the period
of 21 days, so I need all the legroom I can get. I'm sorta tall "you
all."
Everything is still on for a May 16 th departure from Salinas to Barrow.
May 23 to 28 Barrow to Key West. May 30 to June 2 Kitty hawk to Salinas.
That should give an Aircoupe all of the C1-b World and National
Transcontinental records Sanctioned by the NAA.
I do appreciate all the advice and support that you guys have offered
during the nine months of planning that has gone into the adventure.
I assure you that we do not intend to set any records that cannot ever
be broken. we intend to follow safety procedures and take it slow and
carefully, so we can achieve predictable results. Our Major Goal is to
set the records FIRST, then let someone come along in a plastic hot rod
and beat it all to what-not, but he won't be FIRST!
We have aboard survival equipment and a Tracker, which failed to live up
to expectations last year when we set the West/East Transcontinental
record, (which will be presented at the "Theater in the Woods," at
Oshkosh this Summer, Can't miss that.
re: the tracker My Lovely Child Bride will post the addy on the
"Coupers" page when and if we get it to working.
See all you lovely Folks at Terrell, and Oshkosh this summer

Lets have some fun!
