Yesterday, as I drove past the local airport, Qualicum Beach B.C. I
saw a Cessna sitting at an odd angle off the side of the runway in the
long grass. I drove around the field and had a look. As it turns out a
student on his first solo flight had a slight problem. It looks like he
was not properly taught how to compensate for side drift on landing. He
ended up about 150' off the pavement. I don't think he was hurt, but it
looks like the Cessna is most likely a write off. The top cowling was
gone, the prop was wrapped around the engine, the nose wheel was bent
back flat aginst the fuselage, the left main gear was gone, the left
wing tip broken and the wing skin wrinkled, the fuselage was buckled
down just behind the rear window, the left elevator slightly bent up,
and the lower cowl bashed in. This is no doubt a real blow to a small
school with just the one C-172. You could most likely get this
fixer-upper quite cheaply. One doesn't like to sound too smug, but we'd
like to think if he'd been in a coupe, it might not have happened.
