It's called the "rope trick"  You can pull the exhaust valve stems out 
through the plug holes and inspect/clean them and also ream the guides 
without pulling the cylinders.  You may, however, find that the valve
guides 
are eroded on the business end, which allows the valve to seat unevenly.  
This is often detectable if staking the valve results in random
works/doesn't 
work results.
