On clear, dry September days like this, when I take off at 3B9 and look to the west, I see the twin towers of the World Trade Center. At least, I used to. Lord God almighty, what a day. Pfizer has large offices in Groton, on the east banks of the Thames river, and in New London on the west side. The sub base is just north of Groton in Ledyard. We've been told that in the case of a nuclear attack, we're pretty much ground zero. Anyway, on Tuesdays & Thursdays, I'm in New London. So this morning I was on the west side looking out enormous picture windows out to the mouth of the river. Just in time to see the subs scramble. The base is at Delta, and the bridge between Groton & New London has been closed for security reasons for a lot of the day. All non-essential personnel have been evacuated. There are police everywhere. Outside the base, there are heavily armed guards seaching every car that goes into the base. Even in our little town, we're only two hours from New York. Hundreds of thousands of people commute into the city from Connecticut every day. There are emergency vehicles waiting at all the train stations for the folks who couldn't be treated in Manhattan -- the walking wounded. I heard a newscaster say that one of the major concerns is for all the children whose parents worked in the towers. There will be a lot of new orphans tonight. God help us all. And God help us to find the bastards who did it.
