This whole thing is a mess. Today a GA plane went over New York and people nearly panicked. I understand everyone's concern with flights overhead. My significant other was stranded in Boston and finally got a rental car to get her back to Atlanta. She mentioned that it is total chaos there. If you have so much as a Leatherman in view they will arrest you. People aren't ready to have airplanes flying over their heads. Even I, as a pilot living in Atlanta, feel much more at ease without air traffic over me. I live under right downwind for 2R at KPDK. I too am itching to get up into the air again, but I do understand the concerns and the need for people to feel more comfortable right now. In a day or two it will probably be business as usual and we can all get our plane fixes. On the darker side, I'm sure once flying begins sight seeing tours by air will be a big hit in the Manhattan area. There are just enough inconsiderate screwballs out there with pilot's licenses to do it too. Until this incident becomes yesterday's news in the hearts of Americans, there will be a bit of discomfort every time a plane flies overhead. I don't feel its bad idea to give people time to get over it. I was just there 3 weeks ago and I have a friend who works across the street from WTC that I'm still hoping to hear a status on. There are others on this list that are in similar situations. Everything is just too raw right now to really consider any other alternative. I truly believe the general consensus in the FAA is to keep airplanes on the ground so terrorists can't get out of the country. Incidentally, on a lighter note, there are some truly honest people out there. In the area price gouging my significant other was actually given a price break. Alamo Car rental is charging her ONLY $49 a day with unlimited mileage and one way drop off. For those of you familiar with car rentals, this is virtually unheard of! I'm glad there are actually some reputable business people out there and they now have at least 2 customers for life! Anyway, just my couple of cents...
