Just offhand I would say your mechanic is right. If your oil pump
was no good it would not heal it's self. If your pressure relief valve
stuck for some reason, the oil is just dumped into the base instead of
being forced through the bearings etc. Fortunately there is enough
restriction still in the relief valve to cause some oil pressure. I'm
not sure how easy it is to get at the relief valve, but I would remove
it and have a good close look at it if possible. As far as I can see,
there is nothing else that can vary the oil pressure like that, short of
running out of oil, which you didn't. Hope this helps.
