JOE, THE "BOOK" suggests that leaning the mixture below 5000Ft is not effective - not recommended.. So most Ercoupes are wired full rich to elimnate another gadget on the panel. I hooked mine up, but found I didn't often get above 5000 feet, and it was true...just another gadget. So, I re-safetied it Full rich. I seldom get above 5000 ft. But several of the folks who live in high altitudes report excellent use of the mixture control...but --- one has to be very careful and slowly change positions...as the mixture is controlled by bleeding air into the float chamber, depressing the level of fuel, to achieve a leaner mixture. It happens relatively slowly....With a cyl head temp guage/exhaust temp guage,folks seem to get excellent results. Otherwise there is not the expected quick engine response as found in modern carbs....And you cannot use the mixture control to shut down the engine. Use the ingition switch. Still, I think, the Stromberg is the best, simpliest effective carburetter.....only without an accelerator pump. So, one has to be prudent in not opening the throttle suddenly, or the engine studders or quits... Understanding this, it is not a problem.....just open the throttle slowly, as the engine picks up RPM...... I am not aware of ANY ADs on the Stromberg.......not like other Carburetters... There is a maintenance job to occassionally perform: clean the mixture control discs occassionally....especially if you cleaned the round air filter, and didn't oil it as required. Then dust particles will flow thru the air cleaner, and stop up the three little holes in the mixture control disc.....making the mixture too rich.......Easily fixed without taking the carb off the airplane..use a 90 degree screwdriver to remove the three screws. Carefully clean and replace the discs and spring,as removed; and re-safety the three screws...and the mixture control lever. Then go flying.
