Hi Pete,
Yes, you are correct in the statement that the performace should be 
checked, GPS is a good source. Using a GPS (Hand held) is not a 
violation of the FAR's as long as it is not used as a primary flight or 
Primary navaigational means. As far as checking the exhaust, mine showed 
no signs of problems. The compressions where in the mid 60's on mine. 
But with the information that was given, from Mr. Rick, it was showing 
the same signs as mine at the time before overhaul. My statement stands, 
if in doubt, "get the engine checked".
