Dennis, I certainly agree, BUT as far as the so-called "truth teller"
goes,
when you read the NTSB reports, any reasonable person would come to two
conclusions:

1. Other than simple pilot error, such as flying into extreme weather and
running out of gas CARB ICE is one of the greatest safety issues in the
coupe. While riding heard on corrosion may be a big challange with ALL
older
aircraft, draining sumps and frequently "vacuuming" the tanks with the
hose
trick, etc. seems far more critical on an daily basis. I have the Marvel
carb, and I sometimes drain the bowl too if I've seen a lot of water,
especially if it's cold.

2. ANYONE who:

A. Has never flown
B. Has not flown in YEARS

Should hire an instructor!!! the coupe is still an airplane!

The "Truth Teller" would have people believe the Ercoupe is inhearently
unsafe by design and they are routinely falling out of the air due to
corrosion.

He's MORE than full of it. The "truth teller" seems to have bought the
wrong
airplane, perhaps due to a lousy pre-purchase inspection so he's on a
misguided crusade. The point is to be vigilant and stop corrosion early,
before it can become a safety threat.

Stopping corrosion is very important, but does NOT seem to be the single
greatest safety factor. Many ADs are well reasoned and important, but
sometimes you have to wonder with the FAAs recent attitude if they are
going
to start asking us to recover our wings every year. This also begs the
question "Do they just want to get rid of most of us private GA fliers in
this fashion?". Being on the lookout for corrosion is certainly very
important, but if it as you rightly point out it shouldn't distract anyone
from carefully examining the WHOLE aircraft.

Stay warm, old buddy!
