In reply to the posting by Rob Talbot-Jones of Rantoul, Ill, I want to
add my personal experience with tank size. Many Ercoupe owners think
they have 9 gallon wing tanks when in fact they have 8 gallon tanks. One
reason they do is that original fuel tank caps are stamped 9 gallons.
Originally the Ercoupes came with wing tanks that were 9 gallons. and
are NOT flat on both ends. On the fuselage end have an end which
contours to the round of the fuselage and that shape is capable of
holding 9 gallons. If you have a wing tank that is flat on both ends,
one that you can stand on either end when placing it on the floor when
removed, you have an 8 gallon tank. You cannot stand the 9 gallon tanks
on either end when removed from the airplane. We have 5 Ercoupes in my
home town and other owners have argued with me til they are blue in the
face insisting that their replacement (non original) wing tanks, which
are flat on both ends, hold 9 gallons. Their reason for believing they
hold 9 gallons is that the old books say the the wing tank capacity is 9
gallons and the original caps (this is the main reason) are stamped 9
gallons. My wing tanks are flat on both ends, and when empty will only
take 8 gallons each, I filled them to capacity when totally empty and 8
gallons is all they will take. My fuel caps are stamped 9 gallons.

Fuselage tank. There are two sizes, 5 and 6 gallon. Mine happens to
hold 6 gallons. I measured it by filling it when it was totally empty.
So my fuel capacity is 8+8+6=22 gallons total capacity. Other possible
combinations are 9+9+6= 24 gallons. 9+9+5= 23 gallons. 8+8+5= 21
gallons. Beware and don't plan for 24 gallons when in fact your total
fuel capacity could possibily be 21 gallons depending on your particular
combination of wing and fuselage tanks. Don't go by what is stamped on
your original fuel filler caps. Your tanks may have been replaced with 8
gallon tanks and your fuselage tank may be a 5 gallon tank.

The down side is shorter absolute range. The up side you are actually 18
lbs lighter with full fuel if you only hold 21 gallons (12 lbs. lighter
if you hold 22 gallons).
