Yes, life is good. I actually put 4 hours on the ol Coupe this
weekend. Took a short 200 mile cross country on Saturday, and then up
locally with a Bud on Sunday for an hour. I am starting to think that
this thing flies a little faster than I had previously thought. I know
that the wind could have changed a little, but my ground speed going
south was around 105-107. The speed returning, following the exact
tract, was around 115-117, with a high recorded that day of 124.5. This
would indicate to me that I'm at or slightly over 110 average. This is
at 7500 msl, full throttle, or true 75% power. Also, it burned 15.3
gallons, with 3 hours run time. How does this stack up with some of the
other Coupes out there?
I'm curious as to how my engine stacks up with other c-85's out
there. I run a constant 40 psi oil pressure, and the consumption is
around 1 quart per 9-10 hours flight. The oil temp has been around
170-180, with outside air temp of 60 degrees. Last fall with 90 degrees
I saw the temp approach 200 degrees, but it appears that 220 is the
magic number that you should not exceed.
By the way, in regards to the AD requiring the support down to the
gascolator, after inspecting mine, I see an angled support the attaches
to one of the engine mounting bolts at the rear, and another bolt
forward, that comes down on an angle from both mounts, and terminates at
a point directly above the gascolator. Is this part of the compliance
for the AD. If so, the lowest part of the point of this brace is
approximately 2 inches above the gascolator. What parts are required to
extend down and attach to the gascolator? The elbow that goes from the
gascolator into the carb is indeed brass, so it appears that this AD was
once complete on this Coupe, but in later years has not been maintained.
Hopefully all of you are getting into the air now. It'd been a lot
of years since I flew, so I've got a lot of catching up to do. The more
I fly this Coupe, the more I like it. It's fast ( relatively )
economical (now that all the problems are solved), but more importantly,
just plain fun to fly.
