Hi, This morning was one of those rare mornings in Eureka- Arcata. It was very clear, a little chilly, and no wind. What a fabulous morning to go flying. I wish I could have. I have a vivid imagination so I put it to work and soon I was grinning again.
I take the bus to work. The bus goes right by my airport. The runway is perpendicular to the road, so I can look down it to see if anyone is departing. I'm always hoping that someone will take off over my bus and many times that does happen. Seeing the airport is good for a big grin. A plane taking off as my bus goes by is good for at least an hour of joyful feelings. And you all know how I react during and after a lesson! Percy in Portland had a less than favorable experience when visiting Eureka. It was in December 1955. There was a major, MAJOR flood event at that time. I think the only flood in recent history that was worse occurred in Dec 1964. (So I've read and heard from the folks who lived here then.) In can be rather unpleasant when we're in the midst of a flood event. You know, cows and houses bumping dowm the rivers, entire hillslopes collapsing, that sort of thing. We normally have a lot of rain and fog here, but without all that moisture we wouldn't have our magnificent redwoods and it wouldn't be so GREEN here. You coastal Oregon and coastal Washington folks get more rain than we do so I'm sure you can relate. My instructor tells me that there are local pilots who hang out at the airport, in misery, waiting for the weather to get better for flying. I think I can understand how they feel but personally I like the fog and rain. And the clear days are all that more precious for their infrequency. Enough tourism promotion for now. Thanks!
