Howdy Coupers, Saturday was a particularly difficult day for me. I won't go into why but it didn't have anything to do with flying. Maybe that's why it was a difficult day? <g>
Anyway I decided to take one of my long exercise walks. It always helps me clear my head and besides I thoroughly enjoy it. My favorite walking route passes by our small city zoo. I usually don't stop there because once I get to walking I don't like to stop for several miles. For some reason, though, I decided to take a short visit to the zoo. I do like the outdoor aviary. Does it surprise anybody that I have a fondness for birds? There are benches in the avaiary. I find that if I sit down and stay quiet, the birds will soon go back to their normal activities. Well, as normal as captured birds can be. The birds are used to people walking through the aviary so they are not frightened but they are cautious. These are not tame, hand raised birds. So I sat down on a bench and just stayed still. I noticed a bird eyeballing me from a branch he was perched on. There were some other people in the aviary at the time. Odd, perhaps, but I had the strongest notion that this particular bird would get closer to me as soon as the other people left. I was correct. As soon as I was alone, this particular bird flew right over to me and landed on the back of the bench right nest to my shoulder. I stayed very still. I could sense that he was looking me over. I guess he must have felt very comfortable with me because he jumped on my head. He didn't peck or scratch and he didn't leave any unwanted surprises on my head. He stayed there for awhile and then flew down to my knees where he perched for another good long time. While he was standing on my knees, he looked, I mean really looked into my eyes. About then some other people entered the aviary. I thought my new friend would fly away but he just changed locations to my the back of the bench next to my shoulder. Teh arriving visitors asked if my avian companion was my bird. I said, "No and I don't understand this situation but I like it." The people kept exclaiming about how the bird must really "like" me. My new companion stayed with me until I chose to leave. I have read that when birds land on your head, it is a sign of domination on the bird's part. That may be so. I don't know. I consider what happened a gift that came along at exactly the right time. It lifted my spirits and reminded me of all the good in my life. It is so appropriate that the gift arrived on the wing.
