Thanking all that answered. I had a friend help me (Thanx, Geoff!) take the antenna out and clean the connection between the ground (outer connector of the co-ax) and reattach. It took two people because I can not reach the antenna and keep the wrench working on the nut to tighten it up. The performance improvement was very noticible, and I recommend such things whole heartedly.
