Coupers; California at last! In spite of a late start, 0620 AM, and 35 mph

headwind component, we were able to make it to Ramona. We took off with a
10
to 12 mph wind on the ground, but up in the air, it was much stronger. We
bounced around a lot on our way to Furnace Creek Airport in the Death
Valley
National Park. Even though it was only 88 miles from Jean to Furnace
Creek,
it took us 1.5 hr. to get there because of the head winds and the rough
air.
It was 95 degrees at 0745 AM in Furnace Creek (255 ft bellow sea level)
with
about 20 mph wind, down the runway fortunately. We decided to only stay
long
enough to take a picture of Joel standing next to the airport sign. We
took
off and climbed slowly going SSE down Death Valley. When we got back up to

8500 ft, I called Joshua approach control only to find out that the
restricted areas were hot, so we had to go the long way around to Inyokern
to
get fuel. When we landed there, the wind was over 35 mph on the ground.
That
was my first landing when I had the Coupe act like it might try to lift
the
wing.
The restricted area at Edwards AFB was also hot, so we had to go even
further
out of our way. When I was leaving Joshua Approach to talk to SO Cal
Approach, the controller remarked that he had talked to me hours ago! We
landed at Ramona about 1215 PM, and as luck would have it, Warren Hampton
had
just gotten there. It looks like Warren has a lot going on with all his
projects. (Reminds me a lot of myself)
I got to see a couple of his Coupes, and I greatly appreciate his
generosity
letting Joel and I stay at his place.
