The windshields you buy are just flat Plexiglas cut (sort of) to the right shape. It is WAY cheaper to just buy raw stock (.125) and use the old one as a pattern. Cut with a fine tooth bandsaw and smooth with 100 grit paper. Buy the special drill bits (LP Aero Plastics) and drill oversize holes. Get your mechanic to sign it off if you install it as only the side and rear windows can be installed and signed off by owner. (Note you could legally manufacture the windshield as the owner and have the mechanic install it same as a purchased part).
Theoretically there are different ways to manufacture plexi (rolling, water float, MIL grade, etc) but I have not seen a big difference. I took a cardboard pattern to my local plastic shop and they cut out four blanks for me fairly cheaply. (I did break several learning how tight to install the screws <G>).
