Take them to an auto electrical shop and have both tested. Years ago, you couldn't do that, as they didn't have diagnostic equipment like they do now, but it's a pretty ubiquitous (and omnipresent) set-up these days. Only hang-up may be that the gen is not belt-drive. They can still test the regulator, though.
