I agree with John about the going over. The type certificate for the Aeromatic was owned by Univair but they sold it to Aero Propeller Co of Helmet CA (909 765-3178) a few years back. I bought an Aeromatic for $300 at a flea market and had it overhauled at Aero Propeller (I was not going to hang a non-yellow tagged prop off my coupe). It turned out a blade had been badly repaired so it also required a $400 tip repair. The overhaul and repair cost $2156.50 in 1998 so I would suggest you not get too excited about finding a cheap Aeromatic hanging on a wall somewhere. If you have the guts to hang an un-inspected hunk of moving parts off your engine without having an expert check it out first you are more of a man than I. Personally I found it got me off a bit quicker since the engine got to a higher static RPM but that my top speed was reduced. In the end I took it off and went back to the metal prop. I did not like all those moving parts up there (it made me nervous) since the performance was not all that much improved. I suspect it would make more of a difference on a higher HP engine like a 125HP or so.
