George; I am afraid that I must disagree with your statement about the

size and make up of US registration markings. The markings are not
required
to be 3 inches high, and only the letters must be Roman capital. FAR
45.22
Exhibition, antique, and other aircraft: Special rules. states:
FAR 45.22 (b) A small U.S.-registered aircraft built at least 30 years ago
or
a U.S.-registered aircraft for which an experimental certificate has been
issued --- may be operated without displaying marks in accordance with
paragraphs 45.21 and 41.23 through 45.33 if:
    (1) It displays in accordance with paragraph 45.21(c) marks at least
2
inches high on each side of the fuselage or vertical tail surface
consisting of the Roman capital letter "N" followed by:
        (i) The U.S. registration number of the aircraft: or---

The only caveat comes from 45.22 (c) which tells us that we may not
operate
an aircraft in an ADIZ or DEWIZ unless it temporarily bears marks in
accordance with paragraphs 45.21 and 45.23 through 33.

So, as long as we do not operate in an ADIZ or DEWIZ (or foreign country)
we
do not have to have registration markings at least 3 inches high, (unless
you
want to display them vertically instead of horizontally on both surfaces,
then they must be at least 3 inches high)

I had researched this before we painted our Coupe, but I had forgotten
exactly where I had found it.
