Some time ago I posted my experience with fuel spewing
out of my left wing tank filler cap.

Since then, I have had further symptoms, which may point
to the basic cause of the problem. My Coupe is serial 3034,
which used the "intermediate new fuel system". This is shown
in Figure 1 of Ercoupe Service Memorandum 43.

On a recent flight, I started using fuel from my header tank.
When I landed, the header tank was down by a couple of
gallons. The right tank was dry, as expected. However, the
left tank still had a considerable amount of fuel in it.

IF my plane is plumbed as is should be, then the wing tank
cross feed tube MUST be either crushed, or otherwise restricted.
According to the diagram, the return from the header tank enters
a T fitting on this line. Since the return flow doesn't seem to be
restricted, this would probably eliminate the finger strainer in the
tank itself.

This would account for the spewing fuel, since the return on my
plane goes into the left tank. If the cross feed tube were restricted,
then the tanks would not equalize and I would have overflow. The tanks
WILL equalize in time, so the tube must be present but restricted.

I shall lift up the floor boards to see where the restriction is. Are the
53 year old tube fittings still available, or will I have to fashion all
new
fuel lines?

Any input or opinions on this?

Cheers:
