Robert,

Carefully tighten the top cover on the pump....to the proper torque, and
the 
pump will stop sucking air instead of fuel..... I suspect that the top is
not 
tightened properly because everyone is afraid of stripping the bolt, or 
rupturing the pump...so they don't use a torque wrench ( and new gasket), 
when complying with the annual AD to clean the pump and strainer...

I have seen several  coups (including yours) that have failed pumps for
this 
reason..several bought new pumps...!

Quite an expensive solution to an improper torqued bolt problem...or bad 
gasket...

Have your mechanic check the service bulletin and AD for the proper
torque, 
and I expect this will solve the problem of an intermittant pump pronlem..
