Certainly all points so far are valid, however the most common source of bearing failure is condensation, consequently pitting due to prolonged sitting. Once a bearing is pitted, it will fail. The point regarding checking after painting? I am the painter, and AP and discovered the problem when Test flying after re-assembly. I doubt the painting process is a danger to bearings, since they have seals, even if they're somewhat worn. My point in bringing this subject up is two fold. a) I don't think we've discussed it before or at least within the last year, and b) most pilots are not mechanics and don't think of these type of things until they have a problem, or it's called to their attention. Harry's point about moving the AC has much merit, and thanks for the info regarding grease. I think I stated that the AC is relatively new to me, and unfortunately didn't get into my fall checklist before the stripping and painting began. Thanks to all for your input. Doug
