Please don't get me wrong , but .......

Were you flying VFR in IFR conditions ?

Sounds like it........I hope you are smarter than that.....
For your passenger's sake......

Did you think to request Flight Following which is available
to you while flying VFR ?........

It does not sound like you bothered.....

If you had , you would have received vectors and advisory of
aircraft in your area .

Things happen when people do not engage their brain
while flying .

Being from Rio Linda is no excuse........

Reg. 7 Coupers,

Tule fog was only half the battle. Alison (my wife) and I were ready for
departure from Rio Linda at 10:00AM. Prior to that it was 0.2 mile and
100ft ceiling. Along with my buddy Ted we climbed out and headed
south for Pine Mtn. Lake. The farther south we went the higher we
needed to climb. By the time we reached our destination we were at
6800ft and only 100 ft above solid overcast. Unicom reported a 1300ft
ceiling, but with no holes to drop thru we were forced to turn back. I
don't know if any were able to make it in. I'll see if I can arrange a new
date for the rest of us. Coming back into Sacramento we crossed over
Mather Field (formerly AFB) and observed a DC-9 taking off. We were
well above pattern altitude and crosswind for the active. Anyway this
jet jockey turns toward us and is climbing like a scared monkey, getting
bigger by the second. Nose to nose a right turn would be SOP except
this guy's going left! I pulled back hard and left and missed a head-on
by about 300ft. Ted was in trail and turned left and down. (I went up
because I was worried about wake turbulence) The DC-9 never gave any
indication they saw us. I wonder what it looked like on approach radar.
Needless to say thats way to close to see an airliner in the air. The
Bug Smasher pulled us thru again. Although we were almost a smashed
bug.
