I'll throw this in here just to muddy up the water some more.... I was told years ago by someone who had actually done it and tested it that SHORTENING the cable on an Alon resulted in a slightly higher cruise speed. His theory was that shortening the cable prevented the nose wheel from dropping down as far, therefore there was less moment arm from the drag on
the nosegear, resulting in less angle of attack required to maintain level flight, and therfore less total drag, and higher speed. He said that shortening the cable resulted in more speed improvement than adding wheel pants did.
