Speaking of checklists, Once I took a Danish Girl from Columbus, Ga to Dothan, AL in a Piper Warrior. I preflighted the airplane before picking her up in the car. When we arrived at the airport we boarded the plane and I began to use my checklist. I used the checklist several times during the course of the flight. When we landed at Dothan and she was about to leave, I asked her how she liked the flight. She said, " she liked it very much but felt that I was much more nervous than she was." I asked, "what do you mean?" She said, "well, you felt like you had to keep refering to the directions!" I said, "that wasn't the directions, that is a check list. All pilots use checklists." She said, "no they don't, Mr. ___________ is a very good pilot and he doesn't have to use one." I said, "I bet he does, you just haven't noticed it." She said, " Oh no, he is a very good pilot and doesn't feel like he has to use one." I said o.k., but he should. By the way, Mr._________________ flew an Aerostar.
Her point was that if I had been a "very good pilot" I wouldn't have had to use a checklist. . . . . Needless to say, I still do and always will. When I asked the same girl to "crack the window" in the car, she looked at it long and wondered why I wanted her to break it.
