I further review tme Query that I did on Ercoupe accidents and can provide some specifics. Site is www.ntsb.gov/NTSB/
I searched on the Ercoupe 415 for all the dates from the earliest record (they go back to 1983) to the latest date. 113 records met my criteria. That is 113 Ercoupe 415 accidents. I counted 22 fatal accidents in which 30 died. 1. One fatal accident, owner had moved battery from it's original location to foreward of firewall and installed circuit breakers instead of fuses, frayed wires at firewall penetration hold, molten, fuel tank leaks, fire, crash. 2. Another fatal, night flight, no landing light, hit wires. 3. "Failure to obtain a weather breifing." 4. Inflight breakup. "Pilot exceeded design stress limits of the airplane." 5. "Student pilot's alcoholic impairment." 6. "adverse weather conditions." 7. "conitiued flight into instrument IMC." 8. "left turn after takeoff at a low altitude, insufficient to clear a cornfield." 9. "encountered IMC, pilot's decision to continue. . . ." spacial disorientation. 10. "max gross wt. exceeded, impairment due to drugs, lack of experience" 11. Powerplant problem, pilot's decision to delay making a precautionary landing, hit trees," this one burned. 12. Improper wing covering, "wing skin not secured," came off in flight. Uncontrolled spiral. 13. Low pass performed, pullup initiated, inadverdant stall. No preimpact mechanical problems. Pilot error. 14. Wing rib cracked, inadequate major repair. Pilot practicing flybys for airshow. overload, total wing failure. 15. Low altitude turn, wing struck water. poor judgement. Pilot in command. 16. Collided with power lines. Pilot in command. 17. Fluid, Oil, exhaustion. Connecting rod. Hit tree 1 mile away from airport. 18. Power loss on takeoff. Non STC ed mods to AC including fuel system. Improper fuel system. 19. VFR flight into IMC, continued. Pilot. 20. AC crashed in rising terrian 6 mi west of airport. Pilot inflight/planning decision improper. 21. Exceeded gross weight of 1400 lbs by estimated53 lbs. Attempted take off at field elevation of 3,426 msl, 72 degrees temp. That's the summaries of the one's I printed out. Only two fires of the fatal crashes. Don't know how many fires of the non fatal crashes because I didn't read the summaries of them. I see that most of these fatal crashes were pilot error, including the engine failure for lack of oil in the engine.
