When refueling, I am always present to supervise the refueler. The
refueler
is instructed to fill only the wing tanks (never the nose tank) and to
fill
each wing tank to 1 inch down from the top. I use a clean sawed off yard
stick to confirm when the fuel level is 1 inch down. When the fuel level
indicates 6 inches, that is 1 inch down from the neck. This allows
sufficient room for expansion during hot weather, even here in Arizona.
Incidentally, by using the yard stick I know that 6 inches is full, 3
inches
is 3/4 full, 2 inches is 1/2, and 1 inch is 1/4. If you don't have a yard
stick, notch a piece of dowel or clean paint stick every inch from 1 to 6.
I
use my fuel stick to check the fuel level during preflight or whenever I
want to know how much fuel is remaining after a flight. Using this fuel
stick should prevent over filling the wing tanks fuel running over the
wing
and hence prevent nasty stains. Works for me. I realize this doesn't tell
you how to get rid of the stains, but how to prevent them. You might try
diluted Simple Green and see if that will clean the stains.
