Ladies and Gentlemen :
Time for an update on good old CF-JGW. As some of you may remember, I am
in
the process (a somewhat longer than anticipated process) of restoring the
old girl to flying status.
After much knitting of eyebrows and gnashing of teeth, I have decided, on
the advice of my highly knowledgeable and trustworthy mechanic, to go
ahead
and have what's left of my engine rebuilt, as opposed to shopping around
for
a used replacement. The reasoning there is if we rebuild it, we'll havae
a
pretty good idea what we've got. Also, there seems to be a conspicuous
lack
of used C-85's for sale on the Canadian prairies; and going south would
result in a terrific vacuuming of my bank account, what with the exchange
rate and all. The plan therefore is to stick an 0-200 cam in my old case,
clean up the crank, replace the lifters, bearings and such, and Bobs your
uncle. Here then is the quandry. Should I purchase used cylinders
(2400.00
CDN $ for all 4) and polish them up and put new rings in or buy new ones
entirely? What is the general consensus on this issue? I haven't priced
new jugs yet, any ideas on what those are going for? Seems to me Joa just
bought one, what sayest thou Joa? I'm looking at around 6 thousand
Canadian
dollars (That's roughly 4K USD) for the rebuild; I don't think I can find
a
decent used engine for that price...
Any suggestions out there?
Spike
