Dear Folks,

Speaking of Spam, the food(?) kind, I saw a segment on one the TV news
shows, Dateline, I think. The reporter said that Spam is a big seller in
Hawaii. It is used in many dishes in people's homes and even in good
restaurants. I found that story pretty unbelievable and I don't trust the
media all that much. So I asked one of my fellow grad students who is 1/2
Hawaiian. He is slim and trim, so I find it unlikely that he ever ate
much Spam. Here is his response to my question, "Is it true that Spam is
a favorite food item in Hawaii?" I found his answer amusing. I hope you
do too.

>Yes indeed I was raised on spam. When I first moved to the mainland to
>go to college my mom sent me a 'care package' from home. I opened this
>package in front of friends at the dorms as was the custom. I was
>personally stoked to find a bag of Hinode rice, a half dozen things of
>ramen and 3 cans of spam. My friends all felt very sorry for me as they
>thought only extremely poor and destitute people ate spam. I tried to
>convert them by frying up grilled spam and cheese sandwiches when they
had
>the munchies. All but one could not stomach it. The one that loved it
>has since grown an enormous stomach. I have not had it in years though I
>do have two cans in my cupboard at home...a friend sent me 2 cans of Spam
>'lite' as a joke.

Cheers,

Georgia
