How did you use the same filter for a couple of years without 
having the dirty filter choke your engine?  Did you wash the element?

These filters aren't made to be used for a long time, they need to be 
replaced at least at every annual.  They're only a few bucks.

Also, they can't be washed because it will remove the sticky stuff
that makes them work.  That would probably make them deteriorate early,
