Steve, The tower was radioing to him that they could not pick him up on radar and he was in a mode c area...
He kept ajusting it and kept asking if they could see him now. The tower to the pilot transmission was release here some time ago. Unless he changed the inside set up the planes mode c. was to his left and he kept playing with it instead of flying the plane. There is hills between Monterey, airport and the ocean.... when he came out of the trees his altitude was still at 500feet... with the splattering of the terran it is doubtfull that they could of saw him at the height he was at. It still boils down to a expierance pilot, that was not quilitied for the plane he was flying. Wayne, and I have had two friends killed in a long e-z and one in a fly baby 2 this is part of the reason that we sold them. The long e-z is a very fast reacting plane... and really isn't for any one whose reaction time might of been slowed by age. unless they grew up with and fly it all the time. The friend of ours was a State Fire Inspector... in April of the year in question he didn't have a pilots license.... in Aug he was dead in the long e-z. on final at Redlands, Cal. he hit a cross went and it did what it is famous for in inexpierance hands, came in and cart wheeled in flames down the runway. John Denver, was a good pilot that got over confident in his ability to fly that plane.
