We have a Val Com 760 in our plane, and it works great. Was installed in
1991, and from the logs, it appears to have never been worked on since
then. We don't have a cabin speaker, just a hard wired intercom and
headset plugs. I normally set the volume on both the intercom and radio
at the halfway point, and everything is fine at that setting.
My only objection to the Val Com unit deals with the auto dimming feature
for the display. When you're flying on a sunny day, and move your body or
head in such a way that it gets in front of the radio, the display will
dim slightly, going back to full bright as soon as your shadow is removed
from in front of the unit. Until I experienced this a few times, I
thought something was wrong, but that's just the way it works.
I couldn't tell from the question posed in the original posting whether
the person is trying to use a cabin speaker or headsets.
Whenever anyone is installing a radio, I would heartily recommend spending
a few more $$ for a hard wired intercom; it sure beats all of those wires
dangling about for a portable unit.
