Mike Jackson writes:

Are these known bugs? Are they bugs in Samba or Courier IMAP? Any advice on how to proceed to resolution?

Any filesystem corruption is due to a filesystem bug. A user application cannot, by definition, corrupt any filesystem unless it runs as root and therefore has sufficient privileges to open the filesystem partition as a block device, and scribble random bits all over the place.

It is the operating system's job and responsibility to prevent all applications from corrupting any system resource.
