Sad, sad, I remember not choosing that alternate configuration because
it had completely different sharing semantics (such as a completely
different visibility of changes made by other users of the same folder).

Long term, it would be really nice if the various differences between
thetwo shared folder models became separate and independent settings
that could more easily be combined as needed rather than arbitrarily
tying one choice to all the others.

Thus the independent settings would be:
Login mechanism: System user og database entry(Global choice)
Sharing permission mechanism: File system permissions or IMAP ACLs
       (Global choice)
MailDir ownership on disk: User or mail server (Global choice)
Sharing semantic visibility: Do all users of shared folder X share
the message flags, deletion etc., or does each get a virtual
private copy(per folder choice, default is inherited from
       parent folder)
Namespace layout: is "#Shared" a namespace or a virtual folder
under the main namespace(Global choice or determined by
client capabilities and client software version)

Yeah, I know MSO is not the worlds best e-mail client, but it is
increasingly the worlds*only* non-web desktop GUI client, as all
the others are going away one by one.

Enjoy
