I do use that.

The package I use is called pop-before-smtp-1.28. It's a Perl script which
monitors the log file for pop/imap connections and inserts the ip address
directly into the db /etc/smtpaccess.dat. It removes it after some time
(e.g. 30 minutes).

In <packagedir>/contrib is a script which is suitable for courier. I had to
recompile courier because I used gdbm before this and the script uses only
db-Idontremeberwhatversion, but, hey, no problem...

I don't remember the url where I found the package, but when you won't find
it in the net, I can mail it to you off list.
