We're using the esmtproutes file to route mail through a courier mail system to a plain Sendmail system. We seem to be having trouble with one domain and only one user at that domain. Courier routes the mail to the sendmail system correctly, and then sendmail sends it back.
Note that for 11 users at the same domain there is no issue, but for that one user we have constant errors stating too many hops. Its like the sendmail system is ignoring the local hosts file, but only for one user. Has anyone had this issue? I'm almost 100% sure its not Courier that's causing the problem, but I have to ask... Both systems are FreeBSD 4.8 and Courier is at version 0.42 and Sendmail is 8.12.6. I've checked DNS and the hosts files which look fine. To top this all off, the problem seems intermittent. We've sent test messages from Hotmail and Yahoo and have not been able to recreate the problem, but messages from certain hosts seem to fail... Any help?
