Oh my! How stupid of me. The configuration file shows stuff like this: # SSL2 - SSLv2 # SSL3 - SSLv3 # TLS1 - TLS1 And I tried the SSLv2, SSLv3 variants. It never came to my mind that it should be SSL2 or SSL3. Things started to work after this change. The last glitch was Squirrelmail. But that has been solved too. Thanks.
