Someone had a good suggestion today:

Put up a whiteboard, and have everyone write down what he/she is  
working on. At the end of the day, ask them to check it off or strike  
through. Everyone can get the catharsis of checking things off of a  
big list. This helps fuel everyone's curiosity about what their  
coworkers are doing.

Systems like Twitter, Laconica, IRC or Yammer may help with something  
like this if you'd rather have an electronic format.
