Do I barter-yes. When we first opened, a handful of members were here
in return for work they did to get Cohere going. My graphic designer/
web dev, for instance, landed 5 months in return for her work and now
continues at a discounted rate in return for 3 hours of her time every
month. The copy writer, who donated a press release and handled the
distribution got 25% off her first 2 months and so on.

I also currently trade working, not coworking at Cohere for
membership. Typically, I will ask an existing member who does a 1 or
2 day/week plan if they'd like to cover Cohere for one day a week
(they get to be here for free on the day they "work") since the tasks
are quite straightforward: unlock door, make coffee, greet people,
lock door. This is great b/c I can't afford a staff but do need to be
away for vacations and travel periodically.
We just had a session on freelance bartering yesterday at
FreelanceCamp...here's a link to those notes, it's called "Freelance
Bartering" and is about 3/4 of the way down the page.
