Shipping sadly is out of the question for items that large but I'm sure there's some company in whatever the largest city you're close to (sorry I don't know where your space is, if you're already in a big city then it'll be even easier) which sells refurbished hardware. I.e. I have a friend out in ann arbor who's dad does just that, only with old soda machines and those old metal pull-bar cigarette machines. He cleans them up, gets them working again and sells them. With the cigarette machines he converts them so they can handle items larger & heavier than a box of cigarettes. He has a warehouse full of 'em. Where he gets all that stuff is just by going to huge auctions, from the regular government ones where they sell off seized items to foreclosure sales or he'll drive down and pick them up in a uhaul from cities like NYC where to stop the drunks from trying to smoke in the bar (where it's illegal) they are happy to sell them to him for practically nothing (mainly because he's actually the one picking them up....it's somewhat hard to move those suckers especially when running a business like a bar already has a low ROI).
I would assume pay-phones/phone-booths (more pay phones though) would be easy to find at those types of auctions. Switching them over to be free and/or work off voip or even a real hard-line would involve just opening it up and flipping a switch. An old ad agency out in dallas (Moroch/Leo Burnett) had those old-school phone booths with the 1920s style doors on each floor. They were very cool (and were put there for both vanity as well as a way to make sure people made their personal calls away from the cube next to them where someone might be on the phone with a client). Also with this economy usually when a developer buys up an entire block to tear down + rebuild into a condo/strip mall/ whatever, the city is so desperate for growth that they're allowed to rip out any old payphones that were previously on the property, even the street. -b On Jun 13, 6:46 pm, Campbell McKellar <[email protected]> wrote: > We have a civil war reenactor's tent that our neighbors gave us after using > it for an art exhibit.
