I'm so glad you mentioned this, Adam:

I wanted to call this out because it's one of the most common mistakes I
see in new coworking spaces. It's not always the most efficient layout, but
it's without a doubt the most effective for coworkers. People being
face-to-face is far more conducive to serendipitous meeting than facing a
wall, in addition to the generally improved "feeling" of being a part of
the room.

I always found it funny (in the disappointing way, not the ha ha laughing
way) that people lay out their workspaces with people facing the walls.
Maybe it's not the case outside of the United States, but here it's a
common punishment to "face the wall", either at home in a chair after
you've been scolded or in school during detention. Just something to think
about.

The caveat to this is if you have windows or other openings to other
spaces. We have a number of high-top tables along our many windows that
people love sitting at to be closer to the sunlight. See:

Through experimentation, you'll be surprised how much you can adjust and
improve your layouts to find a better balance of efficiency and
effectiveness.

I recommend optimizing for effectiveness first and efficiency second, since
unhappy coworker tends to lead to less coworkers, and efficiency isn't as
much of a concern when you don't even have enough people to fill the room.
Not having enough places for people to work is a far better problem than
having a perfectly efficient workspace that nobody wants to use.
