KORAPUT: Dhimsa community radio programme centre was inaugurated by
district Collector Rajesh Pravakar Patil in the presence of senior
district officials and UNICEF Orissa unit chief Shairose Mawji at
Chhapar village in Ummuri GP of Koraput on Tuesday. Sova, an
organisation, launched the community radio programme with the support of
UNICEF two years ago with an aim to provide entertainment and create
avenues for educating the community, Ms. Mawji said. The centre would
become the voice of people spreading their challenges and opportunities
in and out of the community, she added.
Tribal folk art forms of Koraput region were precious and there was a
need to preserve them while creating opportunities for popularising the
same. Further, there were some issues still prevalent in the
communities of the region which could be discussed among the community
members in the process of making the radio programmes, Mr. Patil said.
The model of the radio programme was designed in such a way that the
community had the ownership over the content, language and timing of the
broadcast of the programmes. With the partnership of UNICEF, 12
community reporters and 60 community-level volunteers were selected and
trained for the project, Sanjit Patnaik, secretary of Sova said.
The group of youngsters have already prepared more than 100 radio
programmes which were recorded at the community level with the
participation of members of the community. Now with the inauguration of
the studio at Chhapar, these programmes would also be recorded at the
building that was dedicated to the community.
The studio would be accessible to everyone from the community to
record their own programmes and play back to listen them along with
other listeners in the community.
