Because players can then carry a big pile of stones around, to throw
at all of the features they encounter to reveal any feature mimics.

Not sure how it's different from regular mimics; perhaps there are too
many items around to do that. Although I sometimes do throw stones at
strange-looking artefacts. Often I also auto-explore into mimics,
don't know how I feel about that ultimately.

I agree that (unknown) (feature) mimics shouldn't respond to ranged attacks.
