Now for my next "dumb question". In a Gerrit reference like that, is there some way to 
"track back" to a bugzilla to read more about it? Or does Gerrit serve as the sole
tracking/review/discussion mechanism. Thanks for the education or pointers.

This applies to the EGit/JGit project, other projects may be more strict.

If there is a entry in bugzilla we link to it (provided the author or reviewer 
is aware of it).
See https://git.eclipse.org/r/#/c/7277/ for an example, and we add link in 
bugzilla back to gerrit. The
IP log is based entirely on what's in Gerrit.

We do not necessarily add issues in bugzilla for unreported issues/features and 
all of the commits related to a fix may
not have a link to the bugzilla, only the "final" commit in a series.
