There is not enough money or air-time available now to make the public
more sympathetic and better informed, that has to be precipitated by
some catastrophe. Get more products that use strong crypto into the
public's hands. They don't even need to be aware of the details - just
that their products contain "privacy enhancements" or "state of the art
security features".

I'd like to see the politicos tell people that their home phones,
cellphones, PDAs, garage door openers, home security systems, home
computers, answering machines, pagers, and automobiles were not only not
exportable but were contraband and had to be officially modified and
licensed or surrendered to the authorities by the end of 200X.

The financial reality would tick off beyond belief even the uninformed.
The ensuing uproar would mark the time for people to become informed.

Easier said than done, sadly.
